Apple MobileMe - Discontinued

R.I.P. -- Effective June 30, 2012 - Apple's MobileMe will be discontinued in favor of iCloud services.

MOBILE ME REFUND PROGRAM THRU JUNE 30, 2012 <--- Note that's NEXT YEAR

What a mess! Apple has stopped selling MobileMe, put a stake in it's heart to officially die NEXT YEAR, but really hasn't told it's customers about how it's going to really handle the transition and what will become of your existing mac.com or me.com email addresses - and oh, iCloud is gonna be great real soon later this year. And what will become of your iWeb published sites and iPhoto galleries on the web???

This MobileMe - iCloud article at MacWorld helps clarify some details of the MobileMe to iCloud transition:

"As soon as iOS 5 ships this fall, subscribers will be able to convert their MobileMe accounts to iCloud. But you don’t have to do anything right away, as MobileMe will remain in service until June 30, 2012; current subscribers can stay with the service until then, if they choose.

Anyone who has a me.com e-mail address will keep it, and everyone eligible for an iCloud account can sign up for a me.com e-mail address. Anyone who bought MobileMe or updated it recently can get a refund or a pro-rated refund.

Few specific details are available right now concerning the transition of Galleries, iDisk, Backup, Back To My Mac, or iWeb sites. But current MobileMe subscribers have a little more than a year to figure out a contingency plan for handling the various components of the services they currently use."

You DON'T Have To Pay $99 A Year For A MobileMe Account

It doesn't matter how 'Old' or 'New' the retail package is, whether it's the SKU for MobileMe or Dot.Mac: It's all good: Apple honors these older codes to start a me.com account or keep one going for another year. Cheap Apple MobileMe Promo : $69 With Macintosh Purchase

For those buying a new Mac, it's wise to be taking advantage of MobileMe savings with Mac purchase that first year. It's your first opportunity to save. Apple basically has a continuous, ongoing promo to offer Mobile Me for $69 when buying a new Mac, and that's pretty good savings whether in-store or online. It'll also get you up and running with your new computer immediately. Apple store employees are pressured and motivated to sell you MORE than you intend to buy - and an initally cheap MoibleMe add-on is high on their suggestive selling agenda. Be aware tho that it is a REBATE promomtion, so you'll pay full price - and have to do paperwork to get your $30 MobileMe rebate.

TIP: Don't let them hard-sell you on AppleCare in-store. Check out these cheap AppleCare protection plan options you can pursue later - at significant savings you'll NEVER get direct from Apple.

Getting Control Over Your MobileMe Renewal

It's important to note that it's critical to renew or extend your Mobile Me subscription AS CLOSE TO THE EXPIRATION DATE as possible! Apple doesn't allow multi-year subscriptions, extending your renewal date. You really need to enter a purchased MobileMe code near or on that date to avoid interruption of service - and be critically AWARE of your expiration date to time it effectively. See Dave's step-by-step. Adding a reminder to iCal or Entourage calendar is wise. You can find your MobileMe expiration in OSX System Preferences - and control Auto-Renew by logging into www.me.com by UN-checking the renew check-box.
